Robert S. Neuman: Resounding Color at Shaw Gallery
On Thursday, August 13, Robert S. Neuman: Resounding Color opens at Shaw Contemporary Jewelry. The exhibition explores Neuman’s lifelong obsession with color through vibrant paintings, drawings, and prints. The gallery will host an opening reception on August 13 from 5-7 pm. All are welcome to attend.
We’ll take any excuse to visit Northeast Harbor in the summer (one of Bob’s favorite places!) but we’re especially thrilled to be hosting this exhibition where many of his works came to life. We hope you’ll join us!
The exhibition comprises a retrospective of Neuman’s most colorful works. The works on view span five of the six decades that Neuman summered on Mount Desert Island and celebrate the lasting impression it left on him. The island’s pristine dark skies, trail cairns, and myriad harbors gave rise to his Space Signs, Monuments, and Ship to Paradise series respectively.
On and off the island, Neuman’s most profound source of inspiration was place. He translated what he saw into kaleidoscopic abstract canvases that are rich with symbolism. His subject matter varied widely, from the skeletal teepees in his Lame Deer series and abstracted shafts of Spanish sunlight in his Alhambra series but each holds a distinct humanist vision that still resonates today.
Resounding Color was curated by Sunne Savage, wife of the artist, and Christina Godfrey, the artist’s daughter. Of the exhibition, Christina said, “Sam [Shaw] and Bob [Neuman] had a long, wonderful friendship and so much mutual respect for each other’s art. It’s a real honor to have this exhibit at Sam’s, not only because of his beautiful gallery, but his connection to my father.”
