Neuman to Exhibit at Shaw Contemporary Jewelry
An exhibition with art by Robert S. Neuman (1926-2015) and Richard Keen will be on view at Shaw Contemporary Jewelry from August 15 through August 28, 2024. An opening reception to celebrate the exhibition will be held on August 15 from 5-7 p.m.
Mount Desert Island is the central inspiration for the works on view by Neuman and Keen with their works splitting the island into sky and earth respectively. Neuman’s muse is the island’s startlingly clear night sky, alive with the possibility of worlds beyond ours. Keen’s works reflect on the world unveiled by daylight, dense carpets of evergreens, and sandy-colored cliffs crashing into the North Atlantic.
The works on view by Neuman are drawn from his Space Signs series. Spanning decades and diverse media, varying in size and composition, the common thread that binds this series together is the constellations that adorn Mount Desert Island’s night sky. Each work hosts a myriad of heavenly bodies that are sketched, stamped, and painted. More so than any of Neuman’s other series, Space Signs rewards close-looking. No two of the vividly colored spheres are alike, each a world unto itself.
