Monument to No One in Particular at Bowdoin College Art Museum

Neuman’s Monument to No One in Particular (1971) is hanging in Currents: Art Since 1900 at Bowdoin College Museum of Art.

The works on view showcase the breadth of artistic movements that proliferated in the 20th and 21st centuries. Other artists on view include John Sloan, George Bellows, Pierre Bonnard, René Magritte, Lynne Drexler, Neuman’s longtime friend Jules Olitski, and many others.
Monument to No One in Particular is in a grouping of works entitled “Environment/Materialities.” The grouping comprises artists directly responding to their environment through a mix of artistic approaches: “Many capture these places using the strategies of figuration to convey the sights, sounds, and sensations of a place. Others, however, developed visual languages of abstraction that emerged in the mid-twentieth century to reflect experience and convey feelings… These artists ask us to consider: What imprints do we leave on the landscape?”

Currents: Art Since 1900 will be on view through April 07, 2028.
