Alhambra
For seven decades, light and color were the underpinnings of Neuman’s artistic practice. This is most evident in this series of works inspired by a visit to the legendary Spanish palace and fortress, the Alhambra. While on honeymoon with his second wife Sunne, he was struck by the ethereal shafts of sunlight that filtered through the palace’s columns and corbelled arches. Back at home in his studio, the rays of light tilted this way and that, took on vibrant hues, and at times swirled, crisscrossed, and shot through each other with swaths of white pigment standing in for the columns.
