Abstract Figures

The Abstract Figures series sees Neuman’s abiding interest in the human condition collide with an abstract exploration of the human form. Using his signature painterly brushwork, Neuman crafts collage-like compositions that simultaneously contrive and deconstruct his subject. These meticulously constructed, modular compositions also evoke his Pedazos del Mundo series, Abstract Landscapes, and Diamond Paintings.

Homage to WB (2005), one of his last completed works, uses expressive brushwork and color to honor Neuman’s mentor Willi Baumeister. This assertive and heavily abstracted composition contrasts with the calculated naivete of earlier works like Figure (1965) and Beach Figure (1966), which edge towards primitivism.
